The cultural activities of the Becej commune are in the domain of four town institutions:
the National Library, the City Museum, the Public Record Office and the Cultural Center.
The National Library, which was established in 1862, is the
oldest cultural institution in the town of Becej. Its holdings consist of 80.000 books
that, as well as other activities conducted by the Library, are sufficient to cover the
needs of the whole region. The City Museum is the institution that treasures valuables.
Built up in 1933 this museum has been constantly developing its activities to include now
archeology, history, painting, ethnology, numismatics and many other fields of science and
arts. It was this museum which in 1954 established in Becej the Colony of Artist, whose
contribution to the present collection of paintings is large.
The Public Record Office of Becej, a part of the Historical
Archives of Senta, searches for and preserves important documents which can help us
reconstruct the past.
The Cultural Center is in charge of amateur performances
organized in the whole region. "Djido", "Tisa" and "Lola"
are the ensembles of folk songs and dances that are having their performances organized by
this center, as well as the amateur theatre, the recites' group, the "Kovac
Viktor" drama performers. Painters have their exhibitions also organized by this
center.
The chamber choir of Becej ranks among the top choir music
of Yugoslavia. There is also a very good brass orchestra. "Petefi Sandor" and
"Buzovirag & Orion" are the amateur groups that are giving various cultural
performances.
An Important cultural event for the town of Becej is the
so-called "Competition in May", which presents the Serbian-speaking children's
achievements in science and arts. There is also another competition in arts in Becej in
which the Hungarian-speaking high school students take part.
Sports games enjoy long tradition in Becej. The Cycle
Racing Club was established in 1872 and Shooting Club in 1878. Although at that time they
had little in common with the clubs of nowadays, they had an important role as they laid
foundations for sports which are popular now, such as: gymnastics, athletics, swimming,
rowing and many other types of sports.
The first ball to be used in sports was brought in Becej in
1911 and, since then football has been one of the most popular ball games in this town and
its surroundings.
Now there is 32 sports clubs in the whole municipality. Ten of them are
included in the first and two in the second Federal League of Sports. The best scores in
the league competitions have been marked by water polo, football, tennis, basketball and
handball players, who have traditionally the longest experience in sports.
The Sports and Recreation Center for Young People plays an
important role in the development of sports in this area. It is one of the most popular
places for young people, where they can go in for various types of sports.
