Cultural and Historical Monuments

Becej is the town over 900 years old with many cultural and
historical monuments.
The Serbian
Orthodox Church with is magnificent structure situated in the heart of the town stands out
among other monuments. It was constructed in 1858 in the Byzantine style. The church is
particularly characteristic for its high iconostasis with 63 icons made by Uros Predic,
the famous Yugoslav painter, with ornaments made in classical and romantic style.
The Catholic Church witch was built up in 1830 is also
situated in the center of the town. It is a single-dome structure with an extended base, a
half-spherical apse on the north side and a belfry on the front side. Its altar is
decorated with two paintings made by Tan Mora, the famous Hungarian painter born in Becej
in 1828.
 A single-floor building of the old Town Hall from
1881is dominating in the square. Next to it there is an old building from 1894 built up by
order of the Baroness Eufimija Jovic as a charitable foundation. Two buildings from 1902
with their facades over 60 meters long facing the square are accommodating the present
Town Hall.
The square is surrounded
by the former Elementary School, now the Secondary Technical School; an old building form
1861; a single-floor building, former the "Central" Hotel, now the Cultural
Center; the High Commercial school; an old bank building form 1886, now the
"Proleter" Printing House offices; an old private house, now the offices of
"Fadip" and, an old private house built up in 1904 which belonged to Bogdan
Dundjerski, a well-known rich gentlemen from Becej.
 The Water Gate constructed on the place
where the Big Canal of Backa emits into the Tisa is also worth mentioning. If was designed
by Heinz Albert, the Chief Constructor of this structure.Its construction lasted from 1895
to 1990. It is believed that this structure might have been conceived in Eiffel`s design
office. The water gates were electrically driven Electric power was generated by
hydroelectric power plant located nearby at the time it was gates in the world.
